The recent death of 37-year-old mother and writer Renee Nicole Goode at the hands of an ICE agent has sparked protests from several Hollywood celebrities, with Matt Damon becoming the latest to join the cause. The Academy Award winner recently attended the premiere of his upcoming film, The Rip, while wearing a protest pin opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and its recent actions.
Matt Damon protests ICE with a pin
On January 13, The Odyssey star arrived at the world premiere of his upcoming Netflix movie, The Rip, with a pin attached to his blazer that read, “BE GOOD.” The accessory symbolized a movement against ICE following its alleged involvement in the deaths of Renee Nicole Goode and Keith Porter.
Goode tragically lost her life on January 7 in Minneapolis after being shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. Meanwhile, Porter died in a similar incident on New Year’s Eve in Southern California following an altercation with an off-duty ICE officer.
In the wake of these incidents, several grassroots organizations — including the American Civil Liberties Union — began distributing protest pins with messages such as “ICE OUT” and “BE GOOD,” similar to the one Damon wore at the film premiere.
“I think like millions of people around the country, we’re really concerned with what’s going on,” Damon told USA Today while explaining his stance. “It’s about raising awareness about what’s happening in our cities and on our streets, and hopefully promoting a larger discussion about this.”
Damon’s protest at The Rip premiere came just two days after Mark Ruffalo voiced his support for Renee Nicole Goode at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards. Wearing a similar pin, Ruffalo stated, “This is for Renee Nicole Goode, who was murdered.”
The actor also criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for remaining silent on the issue, calling him “the worst human being.” He concluded by saying, “This is for the people in the United States who are terrorized and scared today. I know I’m one of them. I love this country, and what I’m seeing happen is not America.”
